Granted,
when we were scouring the tour books picking the sights we wanted
most to see the Singapore Zoo was not in the top 10. Anne and I have
visited some wonderful zoos throughout the US and didn't think much
of going to a zoo abroad. So, what caused us to visit the zoo? Its
proximity to Tang Dynasty City. Our plans for the day were to visit
Tang Dynasty City and the Mandai Orchid Garden. The zoo was so close
to both that we just added it to the list, and I'm happy we did. |

The
Singapore Zoo is an excellent zoo. While it is not as large as many
of the zoos we've visited it had a good display of animals and, more
importantly, it had an area where you could have your picture taken
with some of the animals. In these two photos Anne is seen with chimpanzees
and orangutans sitting on her lap. We thoroughly enjoyed this. It's
not often you get to mingle with some of the animals and this was
an added treat for us both.
They also had an area where you could have your picture taken with
a snake wrapped around you, but by the time we finished taking the
pictures with the apes they had gone to lunch. But, we were able to
make up for it later at Mt. Faber. |

Visiting
any zoo one of my favorite animals to watch is the Polar Bear. They
always seem to be having so much fun as this one (above) is with a
simple plastic jug. The Rhino (at right) was also interesting to watch.
They have, as you know, a reputation for being ferocious. This one
appeared to have a ferocious streak, but it was amazing that a little
bit of colored plastic could keep him at bay. On the other side of
the red and white plastic line were several workers. Only the plastic
line separated them from the Rhino. He definitely paid attention to
them and even snorted a few times, but when they gestured toward him
he backed down quickly. It was kind of surprising to watch this ferocious
animal being meek. |
